ALICJA W KRAINIE CZARÓW

   Nie mozesz wyobrazic sobie, kochanie, jak bardzo jestem rada, ze cie znowu spotykam - rzekla Ksiezna, opierajac sie przyjaznie na ramieniu Alicji. - Chodz, przejdziemy sie troche razem.

   'You can't think how glad I am to see you again, you dear old thing!' said the Duchess, as she tucked her arm affectionately into Alice's, and they walked off together.

   Alicja byla mile zaskoczona dobrym humorem Ksiezny i pomyslala, ze jej dzikie zachowanie sie w kuchni musialo byc spowodowane nadmierna iloscia pieprzu w atmosferze.

   Alice was very glad to find her in such a pleasant temper, and thought to herself that perhaps it was only the pepper that had made her so savage when they met in the kitchen.

   „Gdybym ja byla Ksiezna - myslala dalej (choc bez wiekszego przekonania) - nie trzymalabym w ogóle pieprzu w kuchni. Zupa moze sie swietnie obejsc bez pieprzu, a kto wie, czy to nie on wlasnie robi z ludzi dzikusów”. Alicja byla wyraznie dumna z wynalezionej przez siebie nowej teorii, rozwijala ja wiec w dalszym ciagu: „Ocet czyni ludzi kwasnymi, rumianek - gorzkimi, a dzieki cukierkom dzieci staja sie slodkie. Chcialabym, zeby dorosli ludzie wiedzieli o tym; moze nie byliby wtedy tacy skapi i...”

   'When I'M a Duchess,' she said to herself, (not in a very hopeful tone though), 'I won't have any pepper in my kitchen AT ALL. Soup does very well without—Maybe it's always pepper that makes people hot-tempered,' she went on, very much pleased at having found out a new kind of rule, 'and vinegar that makes them sour—and camomile that makes them bitter—and—and barley-sugar and such things that make children sweet-tempered. I only wish people knew that: then they wouldn't be so stingy about it, you know—'

   Rozmyslajac Alicja zapomniala calkiem o ksieznej i zdziwila sie, gdy uslyszala nagle jej glos tuz przy swoim uchu.

- Myslisz pewnie o czyms, drogie dziecko, i dlatego sie nie odzywasz. Nie umiem ci teraz powiedziec, jaki stad plynie moral, ale za chwile na pewno sobie przypomne.

   She had quite forgotten the Duchess by this time, and was a little startled when she heard her voice close to her ear. 'You're thinking about something, my dear, and that makes you forget to talk. I can't tell you just now what the moral of that is, but I shall remember it in a bit.'

   - Moze nie ma moralu - rzekla Alicja niesmialo.

   'Perhaps it hasn't one,' Alice ventured to remark.

   - Nie, nie, moje dziecko - odparla Ksiezna. - Kazda rzecz ma swój moral. Trzeba go tylko umiec znalezc.

   'Tut, tut, child!' said the Duchess. 'Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it.' And she squeezed herself up closer to Alice's side as she spoke.

   To mówiac przysunela sie jeszcze blizej do Alicji, która nie odczuwala z tego powodu specjalnego zachwytu. Po pierwsze dlatego, ze Ksiezna byla strasznie brzydka, po drugie - poniewaz byla akurat takiego wzrostu, ze opierala sie o ramie Alicji podbródkiem, podbródek zas miala okropnie ostry. Alicja jednak znosila to bez szemrania, nie chcac okazac sie nieuprzejma.

   Alice did not much like keeping so close to her: first, because the Duchess was VERY ugly; and secondly, because she was exactly the right height to rest her chin upon Alice's shoulder, and it was an uncomfortably sharp chin. However, she did not like to be rude, so she bore it as well as she could.

   - Gra robi sie coraz bardziej interesujaca - odezwala sie, aby podtrzymac rozmowe.

   'The game's going on rather better now,' she said, by way of keeping up the conversation a little.

   Alicja pomyslala sobie, ze Ksiezna musi miec bzika na punkcie moralów.

   'How fond she is of finding morals in things!' Alice thought to herself.

   - Dziwisz sie zapewne, ze nie obejmuje cie za szyje - rzekla po chwili Ksiezna - ale prawde mówiac nie jestem pewna lagodnego usposobienia twego flaminga. Czy chcesz, zebym spróbowala?

   'I dare say you're wondering why I don't put my arm round your waist,' the Duchess said after a pause: 'the reason is, that I'm doubtful about the temper of your flamingo. Shall I try the experiment?'

   - On chyba gryzie - odpowiedziala szybko Alicja, której nie zalezalo na tej pieszczocie.

   'HE might bite,' Alice cautiously replied, not feeling at all anxious to have the experiment tried.

   - Oczywiscie, flamingi i musztarda gryza. A stad plynie moral, ze „lepszy wróbel w reku niz dzieciol na seku”.

   'Very true,' said the Duchess: 'flamingoes and mustard both bite. And the moral of that is—"Birds of a feather flock together."'

   -Tylko ze musztarda nie jest ptakiem - zauwazyla Alicja.

   'Only mustard isn't a bird,' Alice remarked.

   - Racja, jak zwykle racja - zgodzila sie szybko Ksiezna. - Masz wyjatkowo jasny sposób wyrazania swych mysli.

   'Right, as usual,' said the Duchess: 'what a clear way you have of putting things!'

   - Zdaje sie, ze to jest mineral - rzekla niepewnie Alicja.

   'It's a mineral, I THINK,' said Alice.

   - Z cala pewnoscia. Niedaleko stad w lesie znajduja sie wielkie kopalnie musztardy. A z tego wynika moral, ze „im dalej w las, tym wiecej drzew”.

   'Of course it is,' said the Duchess, who seemed ready to agree to everything that Alice said; 'there's a large mustard-mine near here. And the moral of that is—"The more there is of mine, the less there is of yours."'

   - Wiem, juz wiem! - wykrzyknela Alicja, nie zwracajac uwagi na ostatnie slowa Ksiezny. - Musztarda jest jarzyna! Nie wyglada na to, ale jest.

   'Oh, I know!' exclaimed Alice, who had not attended to this last remark, 'it's a vegetable. It doesn't look like one, but it is.'

   - Zgadzam sie z toba w zupelnosci, a stad plynie moral, ze „oszczednoscia i praca ludzie sie bogaca”. Moge wytlumaczyc ci to przystepnie: ludzie, którzy nie sa sklonni oddawac sie lenistwu i uwazaja za stosowne nie holdowac zbytniej rozrzutnosci, byliby niewatpliwie ubozsi, wzglednie nie byliby tak zamozni, gdyby nie przyswiecala im stale i niezmiennie dewiza stosowania sie do wyzej wyszczególnionych zasad.

   'I quite agree with you,' said the Duchess; 'and the moral of that is—"Be what you would seem to be"—or if you'd like it put more simply—"Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise."'

   - Pojelabym to lepiej - rzekla Alicja - gdyby zapisala mi to pani na karteczce. W przeciwnym razie...

   'I think I should understand that better,' Alice said very politely, 'if I had it written down: but I can't quite follow it as you say it.'

   -To jeszcze nic - przerwala Ksiezna glosem, w którym przebijala próznosc - nic wobec tego, co moglabym powiedziec, gdybym zadala sobie trud.

   'That's nothing to what I could say if I chose,' the Duchess replied, in a pleased tone.

   - Naprawde niech pani nie zadaje sobie trudu...

   'Pray don't trouble yourself to say it any longer than that,' said Alice.

   - Och, nie moze byc mowy o trudzie. Robie ci prezent ze wszystkiego, co dotychczas powiedzialam.

   'Oh, don't talk about trouble!' said the Duchess. 'I make you a present of everything I've said as yet.'

   Alicja pomyslala, ze jest to raczej tani rodzaj prezentu. „Zadowolona jestem, ze nie daja takich prezentów na urodziny”. - Nie smiala jednak powiedziec tego glosno.

   'A cheap sort of present!' thought Alice. 'I'm glad they don't give birthday presents like that!' But she did not venture to say it out loud.

   - Znów rozmyslasz? - zapytala Ksiezna, po czym nastapilo nowe dzgniecie podbródkiem.

   'Thinking again?' the Duchess asked, with another dig of her sharp little chin.

   - Mam chyba prawo cos myslec - odparla ostro Alicja, która zaczynala juz nuzyc ta rozmowa.

   'I've a right to think,' said Alice sharply, for she was beginning to feel a little worried.

   - Dokladnie takie samo prawo, jakie maja prosiaki do fruwania. Stad zas plynie mo...

   'Just about as much right,' said the Duchess, 'as pigs have to fly; and the m—'

   Nagle, ku wielkiemu zdumieniu Alicji, glos Ksiezny zamarl w polowie jej ulubionego slowa „moral”, rece zatrzesly sie ze strachu. Alicja podniosla wzrok i ujrzala Królowa, która stala przed nimi w groznej pozie ciskajac wzrokiem gromy.

   But here, to Alice's great surprise, the Duchess's voice died away, even in the middle of her favourite word 'moral,' and the arm that was linked into hers began to tremble. Alice looked up, and there stood the Queen in front of them, with her arms folded, frowning like a thunderstorm.

   - Mamy dzis piekna pogode - rzekla Ksiezna slabiutkim drzacym glosem.

   'A fine day, your Majesty!' the Duchess began in a low, weak voice.

   - Ostrzegam cie po raz ostatni - wrzasnela Królowa marszczac brwi i tupiac nogami ze albo pobawisz mnie natychmiast swego widoku, albo ja pozbawie cie glowy! Wybieraj jedno z dwojga!

   'Now, I give you fair warning,' shouted the Queen, stamping on the ground as she spoke; 'either you or your head must be off, and that in about half no time! Take your choice!'

   Ksiezna nie zastanawiala sie dlugo nad wyborem i umknela, az sie kurzylo.

   The Duchess took her choice, and was gone in a moment.

   - Gramy dalej - rzekla Królowa do przerazonej Alicji, po czym udaly sie na plac krokietowy.

   'Let's go on with the game,' the Queen said to Alice; and Alice was too much frightened to say a word, but slowly followed her back to the croquet-ground.

   Widzac ja z daleka, wszyscy rzucili sie do swych flamingów i jezy. Tym razem przerwa ta uszla im plazem, chociaz uslyszeli od Królowej, ze chwile zwloki w rozpoczeciu gry przyplaciliby zyciem.

   The other guests had taken advantage of the Queen's absence, and were resting in the shade: however, the moment they saw her, they hurried back to the game, the Queen merely remarking that a moment's delay would cost them their lives.

   Przez caly czas Królowa klócila sie bez przerwy ze wszystkimi graczami, wykrzykujac: „Sciac go!” albo „Sciac ja!”. Skazanych na sciecie zolnierze odprowadzali do twierdzy. W ten sposób po uplywie pól godziny zabraklo bramek i wszyscy gracze, z wyjatkiem Króla, Królowej i Alicji, znajdowali sie w lochu, gdzie czekali na egzekucje.

   All the time they were playing the Queen never left off quarrelling with the other players, and shouting 'Off with his head!' or 'Off with her head!' Those whom she sentenced were taken into custody by the soldiers, who of course had to leave off being arches to do this, so that by the end of half an hour or so there were no arches left, and all the players, except the King, the Queen, and Alice, were in custody and under sentence of execution.

   Wtedy Królowa, straszliwie juz zmeczona, przerwala gre i zapytala: - Czy widzialas juz Niby Zólwia?

   Then the Queen left off, quite out of breath, and said to Alice, 'Have you seen the Mock Turtle yet?'

   - Nie, nie widzialam - odparla Alicja -i nawet nigdy o nim nie slyszalam.

   'No,' said Alice. 'I don't even know what a Mock Turtle is.'

   - Z tego stwora robi sie pyszna zielona zupe, która nasladuje zupe zólwiowa. Nazywamy go dlatego Niby Zólwiem.

   'It's the thing Mock Turtle Soup is made from,' said the Queen.

   - Ciekawa jestem, jak takie zwierze wyglada - westchnela Alicja.

   'I never saw one, or heard of one,' said Alice.

   - Chodz, przedstawie ci go, a przy okazji uslyszysz jego historie.

   'Come on, then,' said the Queen, 'and he shall tell you his history,'

   Oddalajac sie z Królowa Alicja uslyszala, jak Król mówi pólglosem do calego towarzystwa:

- Jestescie ulaskawieni.

„Bardzo mnie to cieszy” - pomyslala Alicja, przygnebiona potworna liczba egzekucji zarzadzonych przez Królowa.

   As they walked off together, Alice heard the King say in a low voice, to the company generally, 'You are all pardoned.' 'Come, THAT'S a good thing!' she said to herself, for she had felt quite unhappy at the number of executions the Queen had ordered.

   Idac natknely sie wnet na Smoka drzemiacego w sloncu (jesli nie wiecie, jak taki Smok wyglada, spójrzcie, prosze, na obrazek).

- Wstawaj, leniu - zawolala Królowa - i zaprowadz te panienke do Nigdy Zólwia! Niech jej opowie swoja historie. Ja musze juz wracac, aby dopilnowac egzekucji. - Po tych slowach Królowa oddalila sie, pozostawiajac Alicje sam na sam ze Smokiem. Alicji niezbyt odpowiadal widok straszydla, niemniej jednak czula sie z nim bezpieczniej niz w towarzystwie Królowej. Czekala wiec, co dalej nastapi.

   They very soon came upon a Gryphon, lying fast asleep in the sun. (IF you don't know what a Gryphon is, look at the picture.) 'Up, lazy thing!' said the Queen, 'and take this young lady to see the Mock Turtle, and to hear his history. I must go back and see after some executions I have ordered'; and she walked off, leaving Alice alone with the Gryphon. Alice did not quite like the look of the creature, but on the whole she thought it would be quite as safe to stay with it as to go after that savage Queen: so she waited.

   Tymczasem Smok usiadl i zaczal przecierac sobie lapami oczy. Potem popatrzyl na Królowa, póki nie znikla mu z oczu. Zachichotal wtedy i rzekl na wpól do siebie, na wpól do Alicji: - Swietny kawal, co?

   The Gryphon sat up and rubbed its eyes: then it watched the Queen till she was out of sight: then it chuckled. 'What fun!' said the Gryphon, half to itself, half to Alice.

   - Jaki kawal? - zapytala Alicja.

   'What IS the fun?' said Alice.

   - No, ona i jej pomysly. Bo musisz wiedziec, ze to wszystko bujda. Nikt nie zostal tu jeszcze sciety. Ale chodz predzej.

   'Why, SHE,' said the Gryphon. 'It's all her fancy, that: they never executes nobody, you know. Come on!'

   „Kazdy tu mówi „chodz tu”, „idz tam” - pomyslala Alicja idac ze Smokiem. - Jeszcze nigdy w zyciu nie nasluchalam sie tylu rozkazów, co tutaj”.

   'Everybody says "come on!" here,' thought Alice, as she went slowly after it: 'I never was so ordered about in all my life, never!'

   Wkrótce ujrzeli Niby Zólwia siedzacego samotnie na malym wystepie skalnym w pozie pelnej zalosci i bólu. Gdy podeszli blizej, do uszu Alicji doszly rozpaczliwe szlochy i narzekania. Trudno bylo nie wspólczuc tak wielkiej niedoli. Alicja zapytala Smoka:

- Co mu sie wlasciwie stalo? Na to Smok odpowiedzial w znany juz sposób:

-To wszystko bujda, on nie ma najmniejszego powodu do smutku. Chodz predzej.

   They had not gone far before they saw the Mock Turtle in the distance, sitting sad and lonely on a little ledge of rock, and, as they came nearer, Alice could hear him sighing as if his heart would break. She pitied him deeply. 'What is his sorrow?' she asked the Gryphon, and the Gryphon answered, very nearly in the same words as before, 'It's all his fancy, that: he hasn't got no sorrow, you know. Come on!'

   Zblizyli sie wiec do Niby Zólwia, który podniósl na nich w milczeniu swe wielkie oczy pelne lez.

   So they went up to the Mock Turtle, who looked at them with large eyes full of tears, but said nothing.

   -Ta oto panienka - rzekl Smok - chcialaby uslyszec twoja historie.

   'This here young lady,' said the Gryphon, 'she wants for to know your history, she do.'

   - Opowiem jej - rzekl Niby Zólw ponurym, jakby wydobywajacym sie z beczki glosem.

- Sluchajcie oboje i nie odzywajcie sie, dopóki nie skoncze.

   'I'll tell it her,' said the Mock Turtle in a deep, hollow tone: 'sit down, both of you, and don't speak a word till I've finished.'

   Zapanowala parominutowa cisza. Alicja pomyslala w duchu: „Nie wiem, jak on moze kiedykolwiek skonczyc, skoro wcale nie zaczyna”. Czekala jednak cierpliwie.

   So they sat down, and nobody spoke for some minutes. Alice thought to herself, 'I don't see how he can EVEN finish, if he doesn't begin.' But she waited patiently.

   - Kiedys - rzekl wreszcie Niby Zólw z glebokim westchnieniem - kiedys bylem prawdziwym zólwiem.

   'Once,' said the Mock Turtle at last, with a deep sigh, 'I was a real Turtle.'

   Po tych slowach nastapila znowu cisza przerywana jedynie wydawanymi przez Smoka odglosami: „hrzkrr” i stalym, zalosnym lkaniem Niby Zólwia. Alicja miala juz niemal zamiar podniesc sie i powiedziec: „Dziekuje panu za niezmiernie interesujace opowiadanie”. Czula jednak, ze dalszy ciag musi nastapic i siedziala w milczeniu.

   These words were followed by a very long silence, broken only by an occasional exclamation of 'Hjckrrh!' from the Gryphon, and the constant heavy sobbing of the Mock Turtle. Alice was very nearly getting up and saying, 'Thank you, sir, for your interesting story,' but she could not help thinking there MUST be more to come, so she sat still and said nothing.

   'When we were little,' the Mock Turtle went on at last, more calmly, though still sobbing a little now and then, 'we went to school in the sea. The master was an old Turtle—we used to call him Tortoise—'

   - Dlaczego nazywaliscie go Pila, skoro byl Rekinem, a w dodatku nie mial zebów? zapytala Alicja.

   'Why did you call him Tortoise, if he wasn't one?' Alice asked.

   - Poniewaz pilowal nas wciaz w czasie lekcji - odparl ze zniecierpliwieniem Niby Zólw. - Twoje pytanie nie swiadczy doprawdy o zbyt wielkim rozsadku.

   'We called him Tortoise because he taught us,' said the Mock Turtle angrily: 'really you are very dull!'

   - Wstydz sie zadawac podobne glupie pytania - dodal Smok, po czym obaj przez dluzsza chwile wpatrywali sie milczaco w Alicje, która najchetniej zapadlaby sie pod ziemie. Na koniec Smok zaskrzeczal:

- Jedz dalej, drogi przyjacielu. Dajmy pokój tej sprawie. Niby Zólw zgodzil sie podjac swoje opowiadanie.

   'You ought to be ashamed of yourself for asking such a simple question,' added the Gryphon; and then they both sat silent and looked at poor Alice, who felt ready to sink into the earth. At last the Gryphon said to the Mock Turtle, 'Drive on, old fellow! Don't be all day about it!' and he went on in these words:

   -Tak wiec chodzilismy do szkoly morskiej, choc wydaje ci sie to nieprawdopodobienstwem.

   'Yes, we went to school in the sea, though you mayn't believe it—'

   - Wcale mi sie nie wydaje - przerwala Alicja.

   'I never said I didn't!' interrupted Alice.

   'You did,' said the Mock Turtle.

   - Milcz! - rzekl Smok, zanim jeszcze Alicja zdazyla cokolwiek odpowiedziec.

   'Hold your tongue!' added the Gryphon, before Alice could speak again. The Mock Turtle went on.

   - Otrzymalismy swietle wyksztalcenie - ciagnal Niby Zólw. - Chodzilismy do szkoly codziennie i...

   'We had the best of educations—in fact, we went to school every day—'

   - Wielka mi rzecz - przerwala znowu Alicja - ja takze chodzilam do szkoly codziennie. Czym tu sie chwalic?

   'I'VE been to a day-school, too,' said Alice; 'you needn't be so proud as all that.'

   -A czy mialas przedmioty nie obowiazujace? - z pewnym niepokojem zapytal Niby Zólw.

   'With extras?' asked the Mock Turtle a little anxiously.

   - Oczywiscie, ze mialam: francuski i muzyke.

   'Yes,' said Alice, 'we learned French and music.'

   -A mycie?

   'And washing?' said the Mock Turtle.

   - Rzecz prosta, ze nie.

   'Certainly not!' said Alice indignantly.

   - No to nie chodzilas do prawdziwie dobrej szkoly - rzekl Niby Zólw z widoczna ulga. - Na blankietach naszej szkoly bylo napisane: przedmioty nie obowiazujace: francuski, muzyka i mycie.

   'Ah! then yours wasn't a really good school,' said the Mock Turtle in a tone of great relief. 'Now at OURS they had at the end of the bill, "French, music, AND WASHING—extra."'

   - Nie widze potrzeby mycia - stwierdzila Alicja. - Przeciez mieszkaliscie w morzu.

   'You couldn't have wanted it much,' said Alice; 'living at the bottom of the sea.'

   - O, dla mnie to bylo i tak zbyt trudne - westchnal Niby Zólw. - Przerabialem tylko program obowiazujacy.

   'I couldn't afford to learn it.' said the Mock Turtle with a sigh. 'I only took the regular course.'

   -A jakie mieliscie przedmioty? - zapytala Alicja.

   'What was that?' inquired Alice.

   - No, oczywiscie przede wszystkim: zgrzytanie i zwisanie. („Czytanie i pisanie” pomyslala Alicja). Ponadto cztery dzialania arytmetyczne: podawanie, obejmowanie, mrozenie i gdzielenie.

   'Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with,' the Mock Turtle replied; 'and then the different branches of Arithmetic—Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.'

   - Nigdy nie slyszalam o gdzieleniu - odezwala sie niesmialo Alicja. - Co to za przedmiot.

   'I never heard of "Uglification,"' Alice ventured to say. 'What is it?'

   Smok podniósl przednie lapy i przybral poze wyrazajaca bezgraniczne zdumienie.

- Nigdy nie slyszalas o gdzieleniu? A co mówi nauczyciel, gdy czesc uczniów nie zdazyla zrobic na czas klasówki?

   The Gryphon lifted up both its paws in surprise. 'What! Never heard of uglifying!' it exclaimed. 'You know what to beautify is, I suppose?'

   - Nie wiem.

   'Yes,' said Alice doubtfully: 'it means—to—make—anything—prettier.'

   - Nauczyciel pyta wówczas: „A gdzie lenie, którzy nie oddali jeszcze zeszytów?” - i to jest wlasnie ten przedmiot. Jesli tego nie rozumiesz, no to wybacz...

   'Well, then,' the Gryphon went on, 'if you don't know what to uglify is, you ARE a simpleton.'

   Alicja wolala nie wdawac sie w dluzsza rozmowe na ten temat i zwrócila sie do Niby Zólwia: -A czego jeszcze uczyliscie sie w szkole?

   Alice did not feel encouraged to ask any more questions about it, so she turned to the Mock Turtle, and said 'What else had you to learn?'

   - No wiec byla zimnostyka, byly chroboty zreczne - rzekl Niby Zólw wyliczajac przedmioty na pletwach - oraz frasunki z uwzglednieniem falowania kolejnego. („Rysunki z uwzglednieniem malowania olejnego” - pomyslala Alicja).
